영화 '김정일리아' 와 관련 편지
6·25한국전쟁 발발 61주년이 되는 올해 탈북자들의 입을 통한 아비규환의 현장 북한 정치범 수용소 실태가 한 유대계 미국인 여성 감독에 의해 영화화돼 오는 23일 국내에서 개봉된다. 12명의 탈북자들이 인터뷰 형식으로 증언한 다큐멘터리 영화 '김정일리아'가 그 영화다.
지난 2009년 12월 북한주민의 인권보장을 강조하며 단독으로 압록강을 건너 북한으로 들어가 혹독한 고문에 시달리다 풀려난 로버트 朴과 연계된 미국 여성 감독 N.C. 하이킨(N.C. Heikin)이 만든 이 영화는 EU의회, 워싱턴DC 등 해외 정가에서 상영돼 국내에서보다 먼저 큰 화제를 모은 바 있다.
다음은 N.C. Heikin이 2009년 11월 7~9일 진행된 북한인권행사 Unify Korea 2009을 위하여 보내온 이 영화와 관련된 편지글 내용임.<편집자 주>
Unify Korea 2009에게 보내는 편지
친애하는 친구들, 동료들, 존경하는 세계 지도자들, 인권 활동가들, 언론 관계자들 및 가장 존경 받는 탈북자들에게,
강철환씨가 아동기에 정치범수용소에 수감된 이야기를 제가 처음 들은 순간부터, 저는 지구상 어딘가에 정치범 포로수용소가 아직도 존재한다는 참을 수 없는 사실에 사로잡히게 되었습니다.
무고한 어린이들이 그 안에 정규적으로 수감되어 매 맞고 굶주리며 노예같이 일하고 있습니다. 그리고 이것은 망연자실케 하는 인권 침해 시스템의 일부분일 뿐입니다. 유대인으로서 저는 즉석에서 무엇인가를 해야 한다는 부인할 수 없는 충동을 느꼈습니다.
저의 반응은 순전히 감정적이었습니다. 그것이 누구였고 어디에 있었는지는 문제되지 않았습니다. 단지 저는 참을 수 없는 불의아래 고통 당하고 있는 무고한 사람들을 보았을 뿐입니다. 저의 사명은 여러분과 마찬가지로 정치범수용소를 폐쇄시키고 북한 사람 안에 있는 인류애를 배반하는 범죄를 중단시키는 일입니다.
이것이 바로 제가 Kimjongilia 영화를 제작하게 된 이유입니다. 이 영화는 탈북 난민들의 실제 이야기와 오늘의 북한 실상을 상세히 보도하고 있습니다. 이것은 전 세계가 주목하고 그것을 종식하기 위하여 행동할 때까지 계속계속 들려주어야 하는 이야기입니다.
북한은 냉전시대의 마지막 국경이라고 말해집니다. 제가 세계를 다니면서 제 영화를 보여줄 때, 저는 아직도 냉전 이념에 사로잡혀 있는 사람들로부터 때때로 반대에 직면하기도 합니다.
제게는 이러한 오래된 논쟁과 고발들은 진실한 문제를 단지 모호하게 흐려놓을 뿐입니다. 저는 모든 사람들에게 정치를 떠나서 문제를 인간적인 것으로 깨달을 수 있기를 역설합니다. 대규모의 범죄가 우리 인류 동료들에게 저질러지고 있습니다. 북한 안에서 말입니다. 우리의 동료 인간을 구하고 이웃에서 발생하는 소름 끼치는 무시무시한 죽음의 고통을 중단시키는 데에 우리가 할 수 있는 모든 일을 하는 것은 인간으로서의 우리의 책임입니다.

Dear Friends, Colleagues, Esteemed Leaders around the world, Humanitarian Activists, Members of the Press, and most respected North Korean Refugees,
From the moment I first heard Kang Chol-Hwan’s story of childhood imprisonment in a concentration camp, I became obsessed with the intolerable fact that there is a place on earth where concentration camps still exist. Innocent children are regularly imprisoned in them, beaten, starved, and worked like slaves. And this is but a part of a system of staggering human rights violations. As a Jew, I felt a swift and undeniable impulse to do something. My response was purely emotional. It did not matter who it was or where it was. I only saw innocent human beings suffering under intolerable injustice. My mission, like yours, became Close the Camps and Stop the Crimes Against Humanity in North Korean. That is why I made the film Kimjongilia, documenting the true stories of refugees and defectors, and the reality of North Korea today. It is a story that must be told, over and over, until the entire world takes notice and moves to stop it.
It is said that North Korea is the last frontier of the Cold War. As I show my film around the world, I occasionally encounter opposition from those still steeped in Cold War ideology. To me, these old arguments and accusations only serve to obscure the real problem. I urge everyone to leave aside politics and recognize the problem as a human one. A massive crime is being perpetrated on our fellow human beings. It happens to be in North Korea. It is our responsibility as human beings to do all we can to save our fellow human beings and stop the appalling agony taking place next door.
